Louis XIII built a chateau at Versailles in the years from 1631-1637. Louis XIV greatly expanded it into a huge palace that could house the king and his court and provide a venue for grand social and artistic events. As the “Sun King,” Louis XIV wanted the highest level of artistic and architectural skill to reflect his greatness as a monarch. Today we can marvel at the ingenuity and artistic spirit reflected within its walls.

Versailles is about 26 km (16 miles) from Paris. It was fast and easy to get there on the RER train. Like the Louvre, the palace at Versailles is more than you could see in a day, so here are few a highlights.
